Resective surgery involves the removal of regions that has irregular activity of brain cells leading to epileptic seizures. The type of surgery needed depends on the indications of surgery, location of the irregular activities that start the seizure and the number of medication the person taking.
Vagus Nerve Stimulation therapy is a treatment for drug resistant epilepsy. Drug resistant epilepsy is defined as failure of adequate trials of two tolerated antiseizure medications. This involves a stimulator (or 'pulse generator') which is connected, inside the body, to the left vagus nerve in the neck.
The stimulator is programmed to generate mild electrical stimulations through this nerve to help control the electrical brain activity that leads to seizures.
